    Program Overview

    Reader's Workshop
Each Reading Workshop session begins with a mini-lesson that last about 10-15 minutes. During each session, the teacher introduces a specific concept, also known as the teaching point. The teacher point focuses on a reading strategy or skill. After the teacher models the skill for the class, the children get a chance to practice the skill or strategy on their own or sometimes with a partner.

    Writer's Workshop
Writer's Workshop is a method of writing instruction that focuses on the goal of encouraging lifelong writers. The teacher acts as a mentor author, modeling writing techniques and conferring with students as they move through the writing process.

    Words Their Way
Words Their Way is a new approach using a word study for phonics, vocabulary, and spelling instruction. This program provides students with opportunities to investigate and understand the patterns in words. Knowledge of these patterns means that students needn't learn to spell one word at a time. The children are able to work on their own developmental level. The program motivates students and keeps them engaged in learning.

     Social Studies
The topic in Social Studies for the first trimester will be  focusing on Rules and Laws and Our Community. During our second trimester, we will focus on Black History, and finally for our third trimester, we will study all about Wants, Needs, and Resources. To culminate the last unit of study, we will be visiting a working farm in the area for a class trip this spring.

     Science
We have three exciting science topics to learn all about this year. During our first trimester, we will be focusing on our Earth's Systems: Process that Shape the Earth. We already have a class trip planned to go the Franklin Institute to further our knowledge on this topic. Our second trimester, we will focus on Structures and Properties of Matter and Its Interactions. A lot of lab work will be a big part of this topic. Finally, in our third trimester, we will learn about Interdependent Relationships in Ecosystems. During this topic, we will engage the students in creating data to support their scientific findings when we do our experiments.
